This seminar scrutinizes the African Union (AU) from various angles. We first explore the African Union’s history, tracing its origins back to the Pan-African movement, the decolonization in Africa, the foundation of the Organization of African Unity and this organization’s transformation into the AU. We then explore the AU’s institutional set up, including the African Peace and Security Architecture. Turning then to current challenges, we first discuss the organization’s relations with its member states (Ethiopia, Libya, and South Africa) and with Africa’s regional economic communities such as the Economic Community of West African States or the Southern African Development Community. Furthermore, we explore the field of security policy and here in particular the AU’s peace operations in the Central African Republic and Mali as well as the organization’s role during the Libyan crisis. The final part of the seminar is concerned with the AU’s external relations, mainly with the United Nations and the International Criminal Court. |
