Inhalte

Despite substantial efforts to diminish our dangerous dependency on oil and gas, hydrocarbons (HC) will remain the dominant resource for energy, mobility and many chemicals for decades to come. Environmentally and economically prudent management of this finite resource, including exploration strategies, appraisal, and production, must be a societal priority. The class gives a primer on the subsurface distribution of oil and gas, introduces geological, geophysical and engineering principles that govern exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons, presents selected case studies, discusses unconventional HC (including fracking, shale gas, tar sands, gas hydrates) and ends with an outlook on the finiteness of HC and geopolitical consequences.

Lern- und Qualifikationsziele

To be evaluated by the final exam:
Successful participants will understand the subsurface habitat of hydrocarbons and the factors that control their generation, accumulation, type, distribution, and mobility.

To be evaluated by the term paper or presentation:
Successful participants can apply simple exploration and production strategies to subsurface reservoirs, discuss them and transfer them to unfamiliar situations. They can discuss global HC resources and reserves in an appropriate societaltechnological context.
