Economy is one of the most momentous aspects of human life on every level from the individual well-being to social interaction, national politics and international relations. However, in literary studies only very few scholars research this topic, even though it is, of course, frequently of immense importance in literary works. In this seminar we will explore the role of economics in literature with examples from the Renaissance to the present. In addition to general aspects of economy and its literary representation, we will also discuss feminist and post-colonial approaches.
One of the earlier texts to be discussed will be Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility – prospective participants may start reading before the semester begins. Further texts will be announced in the first session.
The seminar will be co taught with Anna Scheer, a previous MA student at our institute who also holds a Doctorate from the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration. |
