”Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” (Santayana, 1905/6)
In this seminar, we will look at the origins of the main UK political parties and how they have adapted in light of national and international events, particularly during the modern period from the mid-20th century and into the present. We will consider issues such as: class, sectarianism and nationalism, as well as ‘single issue’ parties and how they influence the policies of the mainstream parties. We will also take a brief excursion into questions of ‘First Past the Post’ voting and devolution, both of which have significance for current party politics.
