ONLINE: The Backlash Against Globalization: Dynamics and Contradictions - Einzelansicht

Globalization is under stress. Already before the Covid-19 pandemic, globalization was challenged by growing nationalism, a looming environmental crisis, and the US- Chinese trade war. The Corona crisis turned into a game changer: Since 2020, important economic indicators such as global trade and investment flows show a steep decline. Moreover, governments and companies have to rethink offshoring strategies and the reliance on transnational labor migration. At the same time, there are contradicting developments such as a crisis of global tourism and a fast digitalization of international meetings and conference events. The course will explore these developments by assessing the driving forces of deglobalization and analyzing different trends of deglobalization (e.g. the fragmentation of the internet). Students will study both theories of globalization and ongoing dynamics of political, societal and economic deglobalization.
