ONLINE: The Global Governance of Financial Crises - Einzelansicht

What is global financial governance and how does it differ from other issue areas within global political economy? Which types of international financial crises can be distinguished? How have international organizations (IOs) in global financial governance developed over time and how do they respond to international financial crises? And in how far have responses to previous financial crises by the international community shaped today's global financial governance architecture to better prevent future crises?

This seminar is guided by these questions. The first part of the course introduces global financial governance within international political economy and provides a typology of international financial crises. The second part presents IOs active in global financial governance, especially the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In the third part of the seminar, students conduct and present empirical case studies on the global governance of financial crises, such as the 'Lost Decade' in Latin America, the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the global financial crisis of 2007/08, and the eurozone crisis. The course concludes with a review session and an online exam.

The seminar is conducted entirely online. The e-learning-platform is Moodle.

The seminar takes place Tuesdays from 14:15 through 15:45. The course spans over 14 sessions with the online exam in the final session. Sessions 1-8 alternate between live sessions via Zoom and asynchronous sessions (with guiding questions or optional tasks). Sessions 8-14 are held live. Participation in the first live session is mandatory.

Basic knowledge of theories of International Relations is required.

Examination consists of a (group) presentation (30% of the final grade), plus an online exam OR term paper (70% of the final grade).
