Music in the EFL Classroom
This course follows the structure of a recently published volume on teaching and learning with music in the foreign language classroom (Ch. Falkenhagen, L. Volkmann, eds. Musik im Fremdsprachenuntericht. Tübingen, 2019). We recommend that you work with a copy of this standard introduction. – After some general observations on the use of music in the foreign language classroom and a look at some useful concepts and teaching/learning methods, we will specifically focus on the use of several musical genres, from children’s songs to pop and rap music. We will consider the use of music video clips in EFL and focus on aspects of intercultural learning with music. More topics like Music and CLIL will be featured as well. Whether you are a musically gifted student or merely a fan of music, you are invited to attend this course. Your own suggestions for teaching (with) music will be most welcome!
In this online course you will be asked to cooperate with other students to submit suggestions for using music in the EFL classroom. These suggestions will be discussed in our Zoom sessions. All material will be put on our Moodle platform, including 2-3 chapters from Musik im Fremdsprachenunterricht. For copyright reasons, only a select number of chapters of this standard introduction can be made available online. Regarding the oral exam requirements, please consult our homepage. Details will be announced in our first online session.
