Environmental sociology is the study of societal nature relations - that is, the ways in which societies perceive, relate to, manipulate, use and actively construct 'natures' - and the social relations with nature that people living under conditions of those societal relations entertain. This course will introduce students to international debates in the field of environmental sociology. We will cover both key theoretical and systematic contributions introducing some of the main conceptual approaches present in the subdiscipline, and empirical studies on some of its some of its classical and current topics. Theoretical debates discussed will include
- (critical) theories of societal nature relations,
- the Political Economy of the environment,
- controversies around the 'society-nature-divide' and the Anthropocene,
- debates on risk and uncertainty,
- and Ecological Modernization theory.
Issues and topics range from
- environmental justice and ecologically unequal exchange through
- environmental movements,
- environmental attitudes and behaviour and
- the social structure of fossilist societies
- to the sociology of climate change.
Theories and tooics will be approached based on scientific readings as well as different kinds of other media, if available. Participants are expected to complete reading assignments in due course each week, actively contribute to in-course debates both in live course time (Thursdays 4-6 pm) and on moodle, and plan, prepare and facilitate one of the sessions (in a group of up to three students). |
