Music and Cultural Policy
Music as a cultural practice has always been linked to political strategies. From a display of power to a medium of mutual understanding, music is connected to diverse strategies of cultural policy. The seminar aims to investigate these political strategies and to discuss cultural policy looking at historical and recent examples. These include diverse contexts such as music and political power, music and nationalism, music and tourism, music and foreign affairs, music and exchange programmes, music and cultural heritage, or music and censorship.
The seminar will include an excursion to Berlin.
The seminar in English language combines the reading of essential literature with practical exercises, which deepen the methods learned by means of the students' own investigation of music and performances as well as in an excursion.
