This course introduces students to the interdisciplinary field of Ecocriticism, examining how the natural world and environmental issues like climate change are portrayed throughout the literary and cultural imagination. To that end, we will look at theoretical approaches from within the field (e.g., animal studies, affect studies, and more) and will put that theory into practice by analyzing and interpreting a wide range of literary and visual examples (e.g., narratives, poetry, art, film, social media, etc.). In doing so, we will explore the role of literature and other forms of cultural production in addressing, shaping, and expanding environmental thought and action. Note: The final syllabus will be announced and discussed in the introductory session. |
