Black literature is an integral element of Western culture, and black women writers have over the last decades produced some of the most interesting and innovative literary works. In this seminar we will read three or four novels written in this millennium. One of the texts will be by Andrea Levy – Small Island or The Long Song – and I also suggest Bernardine Evaristo’s Girl Woman Other and Natasha Brown’s Assembly. Other possible texts are Zadie Smith’s White Teeth or Swing Time, Diana Evans’s 26a, or Irenosen Okojie’s Butterfly Fish. We will discuss the syllabus in the first session. I expect that some of the participants in this seminar will be quite familiar with feminist and queer theory, both of which are not my foremost fields of expertise. In consequence, I hope for very lively discussions, and I expect to learn at least as much as I can teach.
For MA students this seminar is part of the 10-credit module Text/Context together with my seminar on Scottish Gothic. |
