1. Workload: This is an intensive course, and students should allow for an average of five to six hours of private study per week when making up their schedules. We strongly advise you against taking this class in parallel to any other time-consuming class such as Grammar 1.
2. Participants must be in possession of a learner's dictionary, such as the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (particularly recommended) or the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English.
3. The materials needed for the class meetings (e.g. textbook, reader, etc.) depend on the specific instructor and will be announced in the first class meeting.
4. In addition to the regular class meetings, the course also comprises a self-study component for private study during the semester. This component mainly aims to boost your vocabulary of written English. To this end, it will contain, among other things, a workbook on collocations. While most of the self-study materials will be made available on Moodle at the beginning of the semester, students are expected to purchase or make their own copy of the workbook:
McCarthy, Michael and Felicity O’Dell. 2017. English collocations in use: Intermediate. 2nd edn. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press. ISBN: 9781316629758 or 9783125410077. Please make sure to get the second edition (from 2017), not the older one (from 2007).
Obligatory units: 1-12, 17-18, 20, 23, 27-28, 32-33, 41, 48-49, 53, 55-60.
You can use the remaining weeks until the beginning of the semester to get started on this book, especially if you wish to reduce your workload during the semester a little bit. |
