The theory part of the module provides an introduction to English phonetics and phonology. The first part of the course deals with the articulation of English speech sounds. In the domain of phonology, we will first deal with segmental phonology, i.e. the inventory of speech sounds with meaning-distinguishing function (phonemes) as well as their most important realisation variants in connected speech (allophones). Selected aspects of phonotactics and suprasegmental phonology will also be covered, especially syllable structure and rhythm.
In order to successfully complete the course, students must additionally participate in a practical exercise ('Übung') in the same semester, specializing in the standard form of either British or American English pronunciation. This exercise aims at the improvement of the students’ pronunciation and provides training in transcription by means of the "International Phonetic Alphabet". Students will also be required to prepare a project as part of the practical component of the module. There will be two 45-minute exams in a joint exam session; each exam component (theory and practical) needs to be passed individually to complete the module. Please register for both exams on Friedolin.
Exchange students are welcome. Please send me an email for registration. Note that you will also have to attend both parts of the module and pass both exams to obtain 5 credits. |
